August was a quiet month for new species on the Peninsula, with only two new arrivals to add to this year’s list. Both new species were expected, with a COMMON TERN found by Al Eisner on 8/14/10 at Coyote Point in San Mateo and the first of several BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS found by Ron Thorn and Leonie Batkin on 8/15/10 at Pescadero Marsh.
Not new, but notable was the report of a Black Swift at Ano Nuevo on 8/19/10 by Pete Sole. The observation of Black Swifts in June, July, and now August is a good sign for this rare breeder in our county. The presence of up to four Golden Eagles, including two juvenile birds, is also an exciting indication of successful breeding.
The addition of only 2 new species for month of August brings us to a total of 291 year to date. That drops us 14 species behind last year’s total of 305 through August 2009. Last year’s total was exceptional because of several pelagic trips that added new lifetime species to the County and even State lists. Hopefully several scheduled trips in September and October will increase our totals for the year.If you have seen any birds not recorded on the list, please email me at Geodani55@yahoo.com.
